Armageddon’s on the way. Quick, get the washing in!
Our economy is at war with many forms of life on earth, including human life. What the climate needs to avoid collapse is a contraction of humanity’s use of resources; what our economic model demands to avoid collapse is unfettered expansion. Only one of these sets of rules can be changed, and it’s not the laws of nature.
People seldom do what they believe in. They do what is convenient, then repent.
The problem is not corruption or greed, the problem is the system that pushes you to be corrupt.
It seems to me that we all look at Nature too much, and live with her too little.
At the moment, the entire global economy seems to be built on the model of digging things up from one hole in the ground on one side of the earth, transporting them around the world, using them for a few days, and sticking them in a hole in the ground on the other side of the world.
You may not realise this, but people have the power to change the world.
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Man is a part of nature and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.
As long as the general population is passive, apathetic, diverted to consumerism or hatred of the vulnerable, then the powerful can do as they please, and those who survive will be left to contemplate the outcome.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from that of their social environment.
We live in a speciesist society. We need to raise mass consciousness so that it becomes the societal norm not to eat meat.
We can save ourselves, but only if we let go of the myth of dominance and mastery and learn to work with nature.
If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there’d be peace.
If you don’t fit in, if you feel at odds with the world, if your identity is troubled and frayed, if you feel lost and ashamed – it could be because you have retained the human values you were supposed to have discarded. You are a deviant. Be proud.
If this world hasn’t made you semi-mad then you ain’t living in it.
Uncertainty is an uncomfortable position. But certainty is an absurd one.
The general population doesn’t know what’s happening, and it doesn’t even know that it doesn’t know.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
The wealth creators of neoliberal mythology are some of the most effective wealth destroyers the world has ever seen.
The public has always, and in every age, been badly brought up.
Free speech is meaningless if the commercial cacophony has risen to the point where no one can hear you.
I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.
When Elvis went to Hollywood. That’s when everything went wrong.
There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.
Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.
It’s ridiculous to talk about freedom in a society dominated by huge corporations. What kind of freedom is there inside a corporation? They’re totalitarian institutions – you take orders from above and maybe give them to people below you. There’s about as much freedom as under Stalinism.
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
The more I see the less I know for sure.
The important thing is not to stop questioning.
The powerful feed ideology to the masses like fast food while they dine on that most rarefied delicacy: impunity.
Don’t gain the world and lose your soul, wisdom is better than silver or gold.
Thinking like ethical people, dressing like ethical people, decorating our homes like ethical people makes not a damn of difference unless we also behave like ethical people.
All the anger and the eloquence are bleeding into fear.
I’ve seen nations rise and fall. I’ve heard their stories, heard them all, but love’s the only engine of survival.
You are not what you own.
A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.
There’s a good reason why nobody studies history, it just teaches you too much.
The future of meat is vegan.
Truth is the light, so you never give up the fight.
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.
We can’t leave everything to the free market. In fact, climate change is, I would argue, the greatest single free-market failure. This is what happens when you don’t regulate corporations and you allow them to treat the atmosphere as an open sewer.
Change arises from conviction. Stop voting in fear. Start voting for hope.
A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral.
If you want to control a population… give them a God to worship.
Ignorance. There has to be a cure. Otherwise we’re always gonna be in the sewer.
A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.
A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the ‘Universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.
I can truly say I don’t give a fuck about your money.
How it is we have so much information, but know so little?
I would like everybody to be a vegetarian. In 100 or 200 years time, we may look back on the way we treated animals today as something like we today look back on the way our forefathers treated slaves.
If you don’t start somewhere, you’re gonna go nowhere.
Hope has never trickled down, it has always sprung up.
Do we want to be remembered as the generation that saved the banks and let the biosphere collapse?
There is nothing more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of the history man, no purpose or place, we have no Great war, no Great depression, our great war is a spiritual war, our great depression is our lives.
The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
The whole educational and professional training system is a very elaborate filter, which just weeds out people who are too independent, and who think for themselves, and who don’t know how to be submissive, and so on… because they’re dysfunctional to the institutions.
Nothing will benefit health or increase chances of survival on earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
When the root is strong, the fruit is sweet.
To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.
Animals are my friends…and I don’t eat my friends.
Neoliberal democracy. Instead of citizens, it produces consumers. Instead of communities, it produces shopping malls. The net result is an atomized society of disengaged individuals who feel demoralized and socially powerless. In sum, neoliberalism is the immediate and foremost enemy of genuine participatory democracy across the planet, and will be for the foreseeable future.
Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.
A ‘No’ uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble.
We are looking to brands for poetry and for spirituality, because we’re not getting those things from our communities or from each other.
I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals, as surely as savage tribes have left off eating each other when they came in contact with the more civilized.
I try to encourage people to think for themselves, to question standard assumptions… Don’t take assumptions for granted. Begin by taking a skeptical attitude toward anything that is conventional wisdom. Make it justify itself. It usually can’t. Be willing to ask questions about what is taken for granted. Try to think things through for yourself.
There is plenty of room to make a profit in a zero-carbon economy; but the profit motive is not going to be the midwife for that great transformation.
It always seems to me that man was not born to be a carnivore.
Man reaches his perfection, not through what he has, not even through what he does, but entirely through what he is.
Truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self-sustained.
Progress is measured by the speed at which we destroy the conditions that sustain life.
Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it’s from Neptune.
When you’re younger, you see the people who are in power and think they must have that position because of some degree of skill. And as you get older, you realize it’s not true, that most people in those positions are absolutely inept.
So we are left with a stark choice: allow climate disruption to change everything about our world, or change pretty much everything about our economy to avoid that fate. But we need to be very clear: because of our decades of collective denial, no gradual, incremental options are now available to us.
The more you take, the less you have.
I don’t bother writing about Fox News. It is too easy. What I talk about are the liberal intellectuals, the ones who portray themselves and perceive themselves as challenging power, as courageous, as standing up for truth and justice. They are basically the guardians of the faith. They set the limits. They tell us how far we can go. They say, ‘Look how courageous I am.’ But do not go one millimeter beyond that. At least for the educated sectors, they are the most dangerous in supporting power.
